2024 Community Services

December 2024
Mary Hoferek, Barbara Thomas, and Dennis Fahey gathered at the BGC senior center to pull together 35 unique gift bags for BGC to provided to special seniors in Gaithersburg who may not have family nearby and/or will be spending the holidays alone. The bags were created from donations from AARP members and BGC to bring a smile to seniors.

We are a small, but mighty chapter! Once again, our members stepped up to make our service project a success. Our president, Robert Stone, delivered our donation to the Gaithersburg CaresHub. Thanks to your generosity, kids will have a happier holiday season.

Every year we donate items like pencils, crayons, etc to one or two local Title 1 schools. This year we helped Brown Station Elementary and Gaithersburg Elementary. Thanks to a grant from our state AARP, we allocated $300 for each school. Mary Hoferek delivered with Susan Wilson to Brown Station while Claudette Lease delivered to Gaithersburg Elementary. Both schools are Title 1 schools which means they have a high level of low-income students. It’s great that we can support our schools in their important work. Both schools were so appreciative for the new supplies! Thank you to shoppers Nancy Dols, Laura Loomis, Claudette Lease, Pat Panzer and Mary Hoferek. Thank you also to Janet Prouty and Helene Block for their donations. Thank you to Susan Wilson who helped deliver the supplies.

It was heartwarming to see all the food we collected for the Gaithersburg Cares Hub. Not only were our hearts full; Charlyn’s office was too. It was great for our chapter to partner with the Benjamin Gaither Center and work together on this effort. Thank you to the center and to all of you who contributed so generously.

Here’s a message from the CaresHub:

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for your support through your recent food drive. We received 450 lbs of food that will continue to keep our food pantry's shelves stocked. (In addition, we donated $225.) We are grateful for your collaboration and for being such amazing neighbors as we work together to create a city where everyone thrives!

Thanks again,

Lindsay
